DEGREE PROGRAMMES OFFERED BY THE FACULTY
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers programmes of broad-based undergraduate education to its students. The degrees are offered in both English and Sinhala mediums.
Degree programmes are conducted on a semester-based system of teaching and continuous assessment and semester end examinations. Each course is taught and examined within a semester consisting of 15 weeks of academic work with 45 contact hours per course.
The following degree programmes are offered by the Faculty.
- BA Degree Programme (3 years)
- BA / B Sc (Honours) Degree Programme (4 years)
- Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) Degree Programme (4 years)
- B Sc Honours in Information Technology (4 years)
- B Sc Honours in Geo Spatial Technologies (4 years)
- Bachelor of Honours in Social work (4 years)
BA Degree Programme (SLQF Level 5)
This three year degree programme includes 6 semesters which allow students to gain a vast knowledge on selected subject areas. BA degree programme is offered in following subject streams.

A student must complete a total of 106 credits including the General degree credits.
BA / B Sc (Honours) Degree Programme (SLQF Level 6)
After successful competition of first year of BA programme limited number of students are selected based on their merits to the Honours Degree programmes. The four year degree programme consists of 8 semesters of study to complete 130 credits. Honours Degree programmes allow students to specialize on their core field as well as on other subjects.
BA (Honours) Degree Programme (SLQF Level 6)
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has 15 academic departments that offer BA (Honours) Degree Programmes. Honours Degree Programmes are offered in following subject streams.
Criminology and Criminal Justice, Economics, Financial Economics, History, Archaeology, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science, Pali, Buddhist Civilization, Buddhist Philosophy, Dance and Cultural Studies, Sanskrit, Hindi, Music, Anthropology, Sociology, Social Work, Geography, Geo Spatial Technology, Business Statistics, Social Statistics and Sinhala and Mass Communication are offered in both English and Sinhala mediums.
English, Teaching English as a Second Language, Buddhist Heritage and Tourism Industry and Information Technology are offered in English medium.
Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) (SLQF Level 6)
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences also offers a Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) Degree Programme. Students are selected based on their performances at the beginning of their second year.
B Sc Honours in Information Technology (SLQF Level 6)
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a B Sc Honours in Information Technology and first year course units are offered for the candidates who have passed the Aptitude test which is conducted at the beginning of their first semester by the Department of Information and communication Technology of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Students are selected based on their performances at the beginning of their second year for the honours degree programme.
B Sc Honours in Geo Spatial Technologies (SLQF Level 6)
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences also offers a B Sc Honours in Geo Spatial Technologies. Students are selected based on their performances at the beginning of their second year.
Bachelor of Honours in Social work (SLQF Level 6)
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences also offers a Bachelor of Honours in Social work. Students are selected based on their performances at the beginning of their second year.
