The Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura organized a study visit for 3rd-year History and Archaeology students who are following Museology as a course unit on the 30th of August 2022.
At the request of Prof. Alexander Kapukotuwa of the Department of History and Archaeology and the Curator of the Archaeology Museum of the Department of History and Archaeology of USJ, Mrs. Nilmini Neththasinghe, the Colombo National Museum had scheduled a guided program for the students to gain the maximum out of the study visit.
Firstly, the students were given an introductory lecture by Ms. Sanjeewani Widyarathna, to introduce the Colombo National Museum, including its history, collection and its role and contribution to the society, followed by a guided Museum tour. Accordingly, the students visited the galleries of the Cultural Division (Ethnology & Anthropology) of the Colombo National Museum, Science Division galleries and laboratories (Botany, Entomology, Zoology and Geology) of the National Museum of Natural History and the Conservation Division and its laboratory. In each division and gallery, the officers provided the students with comprehensive awareness.
The Department of History and Archaeology would like to express sincere thanks and gratitude to the Director-General of the National Museums Department, Ms. Sanuja Kasthuriarachchi, the Additional Director-General (Cultural), Mr. Senerath Wickramasinghe, Mr. Ranjith Hewage, the Museum Keeper of the Colombo National Museum and all the staff members of the National Museum Department for the arrangements to make this study visit fruitful to the students.
