The Department of History and Archaeology resumes its Monthly Guest Lecture Series for the year 2023

After a short silence, the Department of History and Archaeology along with its Students Association resumed its Monthly Guest Lecture Series for the year 2023, with the title of ‘Importance of Use of ArcGIS for History and Archaeology’, on 14th of August 2023 at Prof. Mendis Rohanadheera Hall of the department. The lecture was delivered by the guest resource persons from GIS Solutions (Pvt.) Ltd., Colombo 03, the sole authorized distributor of the ‘Esri ArcGIS’ product range in Sri Lanka.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have now become an imperative and trending tool for mapping and analyzing geospatial data in almost every industry in the world. Hence, the department identified the need to aware the undergraduates about the importance of GIS application in the fields of History and Archaeology, and GIS Solutions (Pvt.) Ltd., was invited in this regard given their vast experience in dealing with both the public and private sector in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, the students were introduced to GIS with their basic concepts and theories followed by several real-world applications in the fields of History and Archaeology.
