As per the decision taken at the department meeting, the Department of History and Archaeology conducted a department-level student awareness session for both 3rd year History and Archaeology undergraduates regarding the Literature Review of their independent study, on the 16th of August 2023, at Prof. Mendis Rohanadheera Hall of the department.
Under the guidance of the Head of the Department, Sen. Lect. (Ven.) Dambara Amila, Sen. Lect. (Mrs.) U.N.K. Rathnayaka was the resource person for this awareness session upon her teaching experience in this regard. Accordingly, the awareness session covered the process and techniques of compiling a successful Literature Review. Accordingly, the session had been outlined as, the Purpose of a Literature Review, Defining the Research Problem, Identifying keywords, Where to collect data and information, How to use sources efficiently and effectively, Identifying themes, debates, and research gaps, Examples of trends and research gaps, How to outline the Literature Review, the Common structure, Writing the Literature Review and its format.
This awareness session is directly related to the 3rd year curriculum of the History (Honours) and Archaeology (Honours) Degree programs, especially to the course unit ‘ARCH/ HIST 0099.3- Independent Research – Phase 01’. This awareness was the follow-up session of the previous awareness session held on 09th August 2023, regarding the Independent Study Proposal Writing, conducted for the same batch of students targeting their Independent study in the near future.
