The Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura organized a two-day field visit to Anuradhapura, for the BA (External) Degree students, who are following History and Archaeology as their subjects, on 28th and 29th of September 2023.
The Academic staff members, including the Head of the Department, Senior Lect. (Ven.) Dambara Amila, Prof. Karunasena Hettiarachchi and Prof. K.M. Alexander participated in this visit with 120+ students, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of numerous heritage sites in Anuradhapura and Mihintale. Accordingly, on the first day, the team visited heritage sites such as the Sacred Bo Tree (Sri Maha Bodhi), Ruwanveliseya stupa, Thuparama stupa, Vessagiriya monastery, Jetavana stupa and its premises, Jetavana Site Museum, Abhayagiri stupa and its premises, Abhayagiri Site Museum and so on. Furthermore, the students were offered hands-on training on how to take an inscription stampage at the stone terrace (salapathala maluva) of the Jetavana stupa. On the second day, the team visited Mihintale heritage site including the main premises and the surrounding precincts of the ancient monastery complex.
The students expressed their gratitude to the Department of History and Archaeology for arranging such a field visit, which is in line with the content of the curriculum they are offered by the department.
