Second Folklore Research Conference<\/a>\u00a0organised by the\u00a0Cultural Centre and the Art Assembly<\/a>\u00a0of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was successfully held on 15th December 2017. This years conference was chaired by Dr, Praneeth Abeysundara, Senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, with the support from the secretary, Prof. Charmalie Nahallage, Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. The coordinator of the conference was Ms. Mayuri Thennakoon from the Cultural Centre. The main objective of the conference was to encourage the undergraduate students and academics to conduct research and to present them in an academic forum thereby giving the opportunity to develop the research culture.<\/p>\n

Inauguration Ceremony of the conference was graced by Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Mr. A. Senanayaka, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Wayamba Development and Cultural Affairs and by the Guest Speaker of the Conference; Dr. Jayantha Jayasiri, Senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Dr. Janak Kumarasinghe, Treasurer of the Conference.\u00a0 Academic and Non Academic members of the University also participated in the event.<\/p>\n

The theme of this year conference was \u201cFormer Wisdom and Qualities for Today\u2019s Coexistence\u201d. The tracks ranged from\u00a0Food Culture, Folk life\u00a0\u2013 Folk Songs, Folk Dancing, Folk Tales, Folk Drama, Folk Medicine, Traditional art and Craft, ,Folk Religion, Rituals and Magic, Plant and Animal Lore<\/em>\u00a0etc. From the submitted 250 abstract represented at about 13 Universities and Institutions of the country at about 150 abstract were presented in the conference.<\/p>\n

Evening of the conference day cultural show and award ceremony was held with traditional mask performances such as \u201cNaga Raksha\u201d, \u201cAnabera Kolama\u201d, \u201cSalu Paliya\u201d etc.\u00a0This years \u2018Best Poster Presentation Award\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0won the poster titled \u201c\u0dc3\u0dd4\u0dc0 \u0daf\u0dd2\u0dc0\u0dd2\u0dba\u0da7 \u0da2\u0db1\u0dc1\u0dca\u200d\u0dbb\u0dd0\u0dad\u0dd2\u0dba\u0dda \u0daf\u0dcf\u0dba\u0dcf\u0daf\u201d presented by\u00a0Dr. Gamini Ranasinghe<\/strong>\u00a0from the Department of History and Archaeology in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Sri Jayewardeneura.<\/p>\n

Ms. K. H. M. Rasika Darshani Malkanthi<\/strong>\u00a0from the University of Ruhuna awarded\u00a0\u2018Best Abstract Award\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0for her abstract titled \u201cAncient Village Society evidenced from the Sokari Drama; with reference to the Ridimaliyadda Grama Niladhari Division\u201d.<\/p>\n
