The English Language Teaching Unit<\/a>\u00a0of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has designed this course in response to a growing demand from students and professionals.<\/p>\n

The main aim of the course is to enhance and develop the English Language proficiency of the participants.<\/p>\n

The Objectives:<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • to improve the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills<\/li>\n
  • to give confidence in the use of the target language<\/li>\n
  • to familiarize the participants with social etiquette<\/li>\n
  • to augment their interpersonal skills<\/li>\n
  • to make the participants effective communicators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Qualifications:<\/h3>\n

    Pass G.C.E. (O\/L) examination with English Language as a subject or an equivalent qualification<\/p>\n

    Duration :<\/h3>\n

    225 hrs. (06 Months)<\/p>\n

    Time :<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Classes will be held from\u00a08.00 a.m to 5.00 p.m on Sundays.<\/strong> Students will be required to sign the attendance register at the beginning of each lecture and they are required to follow a full day\u2019s class work.\u00a0\u00a0 The students are expected to be punctual and should desist from leaving the class early.\u00a0 Late comers or early leavers will lose attendance.<\/p>\n

    Content :<\/strong><\/h3>\n
      \n
    1. Functional Grammar<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. Language competency<\/strong>\u2013 Reading, Writing and vocabulary.\n
        \n
      1. Reading \u2013 Different types of texts to improve reading skills.<\/li>\n
      2. Writing- Paragraph writing, essays, notes, letters, short reports, summaries \u00a0and emails.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
      3. Oral skills\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 role plays, dramas, formal and informal interviews, impromptu\u00a0speeches, telephone talk, short\u00a0\u00a0 presentations<\/li>\n
      4. Literature<\/strong>\u2013 To enrich the students\u2019 language abilities through the study of\u00a0poems and short stories.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Teaching staff<\/h3>\n

        Experienced English Language Lecturers attached to the English Language Teaching Unit and the Department of English. All members of the teaching panel have Postgraduate Qualifications in\u00a0Teaching English as a Second Language.<\/p>\n

        Methodology<\/h3>\n

        Language skills will be promoted through communicative activities such as games, pair and group activities, role plays, simulations, dramas, debates and other interactive sessions.<\/p>\n

        Target Group<\/h3>\n

        School Leavers (over 18 yrs. Of age),
        \nJob seekers
        \nEmployed persons who need to advance their communication skills in English<\/p>\n

        Assessment:<\/h3>\n
          \n
        • A total of\u00a080% attendance<\/strong>is required to sit the final written examination.<\/li>\n
        • There would be three written papers at the final examination. (Duration- 3hrs each)\n
            \n
          1. Functional grammar paper<\/li>\n
          2. Language competency paper (to evaluate your reading and writing proficiency)<\/li>\n
          3. Language through literature paper<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Three oral assessments are held to evaluate the speaking skills of each student(personal interview + impromptu speech, argumentative discussion with a partner and a poster presentation)<\/p>\n

            Those who are successful at the final examination will be issued\u00a0a certificate<\/h3>\n
