SUMMARY:Solid Waste Management
DESCRIPTION:Solid waste management refers to the collecting\, treating\, and disposing of solid material that is discarded or is no longer useful. Solid waste management is an important aspect of urban area management. Improper disposal of municipal solid waste can create unsanitary conditions\, which can lead to environmental pollution and the outbreak of vector-borne disease.  \nThe task of this project is to contribute managing solid waste in university premises and different fields like households; agricultural fields; industries and mining\, hotels and catering; roads and railways; hospitals and other educational institutions; cultural centers and places of recreation and tourism etc.

SUMMARY:Green Building Design and Implementation
DESCRIPTION:Generally\, the green building is considered to be an environmental component\, as the green building materials are manufactured from environmentally friendly materials\, which are then used to make an eco-construction subject to an eco-design. It provides a healthy habitat while ensuring conservation of natural resources. During their lifecycle\, the green buildings minimize the use of resources (energy and water); reduce the harmful impact on the ecology and provide better indoor environment. \nThe task of this project is to improve energy efficiency and conservation\, indoor air quality\, resource and material efficiency\, and peoples’ health and productivity (Green ergonomics) within the university premises.

DESCRIPTION:The Green Hub of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is organizing a series of virtual sessions on the environment friendly practices that will be implemented for the faculty in the near future. The first session of this virtual session series on “Changing the University towards a Green culture / හරිත සරසවි සංස්කෘතියක් කරා” conducts by Eng. V. R. Sena Peiris will be held on 24th February 2021 from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm. \nMr. V. R. Sena Peiris is a Mechanical Engineer and an international expert in Cleaner Production\, Life Cycle Analysis\, Eco Design and Energy Management. He is also a visiting lecturer of University of Sri Jayewardenepura \, University of Colombo \, University of Peradeniya and Open University of Sri Lanka. He was the founding Director/Chief Executive Officer of National Cleaner Production Centre Sri Lanka as well as the President of Asia Pacific Roundtable for Sustainable Consumption and Production from 2010 to 2014.
